EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
