In the early hours of Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant blasts shaking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israel that it had conducted a preventative military action.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were observed billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, without immediately provide additional information.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Prior Developments
This event takes place against a background of sharply increased strains in the region. Major events preceding this attack include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive build-up of American warships in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest talks between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They dismissed assertions about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation remains fluid, with additional reports expected as the situation develops.
