RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.
The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels down to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This action shows British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.
British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "They were among thousands of British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."
In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
