Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not just his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
