The Reason the DNC Refuses to Release its Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: A Deep Dive.

This move from the Democratic National Committee to block the publication of its internal post-election analysis on the 2024 election seems shocking but not surprising. Averse to frank assessments, the party's leadership apparatus often functions more like a PR firm than an electoral entity focused on building grassroots capacities to secure victories.

An Environment Resistant to Internal Critique

Hesitant to depart from the party establishment's culture demanding unity, the committee has stayed under the Biden-Harris shadow all through this past year. Releasing an official autopsy could have demonstrated that party leaders truly desire to encourage public discourse about the missteps that paved the way for Donald Trump to win re-election. Instead, the leadership is moving forward as if there's nothing to glean from the tragic debacle of 2024.

"Here’s our North Star: is this good for winning elections? Should the answer be negative, it’s a distraction from the core mission," an explanation that has been offered to justify concealing the analysis.

Critical Problems an Autopsy Would Have Examined

Any valuable post-mortem with any value would tackle head-on key points of failure. Among them are:

  • Electoral Alienation: The loss among a significant portion of the electorate who voted for the Democratic ticket in 2020 became a critical factor in the close 2024 election.
  • The Choice to Seek Re-election: The determined insistence by the incumbent to run again, alongside an extremely delayed step-aside, is viewed as denying the party's base of a competitive nomination process.
  • Failing the Working-Class Base: During a time of inflation, the campaign reportedly bowing to corporate donors' interests and not managing to confront the effects of profit-seeking.
  • A Gaza Factor: The refusal to adjust a policy position regarding a major international conflict reportedly led to alienating many voters, particularly with young people, Arab American communities, and Muslim Americans.
  • Eroding Young Voter Support: Research indicates a significant drop-off in support for the party from the youth electorate.

A History Shunning Scrutiny

The decision to withhold is consistent with a pattern of sidestepping difficult realities. This mirrors a dynamic in which nearly all Democratic officeholder in Congress went along with a sitting president's insistence on seeking another term right up until a catastrophic campaign event compelled an exit.

Meanwhile, a significant majority within the party's base had been repeatedly informing pollsters that they did not want that candidate to run again.

Financial Concerns

A substantive report might also examine matters regarding campaign spending, including the amounts were directed to insider consultants and ad buyers over the course of an electoral effort that burned through an enormous war chest during the general election.

A Larger Problem

At its core, the secrecy regarding the analysis points to an allegiance toward party leaders that oversaw a disastrous national race. The signal to rank-and-file members – including countless dedicated activists – appears to be that they do not be trusted to see the lessons party chiefs have learned based on a report drawing from conversations with insiders.

An organization incapable to publicly examine its own failings will struggle to escape the cycle which was so advantageous to the winning candidate.
